Concussion Information and Testing

Concussion in Sports

In the past few years concussions have been moved to the forefront of athletic based injuries. Concussion or Tramatic Brain Injury occurs in all sports.  Soccer is no exception.  The Jersey Knights Soccer Club feels it is important to provide pertinent information to its players and families in regard to this important topic.

Students in middle school and high school are now tested in school prior to any participation in school activties. Middle school students are required to be tested every school year while high school students are tested every two years. There currently are no mandated concussion testing requirements for recreational or travel sports players. All Jersey Knights coaches and trainers are required to complete a concussion training course prior to working for the club. While it is important for coaches to be able to assess any concussion concerns during training or matches, it is also as important for parents to be aware of signs and symptoms.

Please look though the information below and see your team coach if you have any further questions or concerns. There is a wealth of information available for those interested. We included a couple of links below. One of the links is for Impact testing which currently most school s use for testing their students. An additional source of information is your child's school nurse who now has to be trained yearly in Tramatic Brain Injuries.

Fast Facts

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth. Even a “ding,” “getting your bell rung,” or what seems to be mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.

Concussions can occur in any sport or recreation activity. So, all coaches, parents, and athletes need to learn concussion signs and symptoms and what to do if a concussion occurs.
